STATEMENT
My practice is built on a sequence of perceived ideas about the intangible aspects of the human structure. Exploring the juncture between conceived realities of the physical body and deeper sensory instincts about what may lie beneath. I am inspired by a search for this truth via the fractal patterns found within the infinite structures present in natural forms. Seeking an aesthetic of the eternal over the temporal, the anatomical design itself takes on the function of an encrypted formula which rests at the point of harmony and convergence; poised to reveal the universal infrastructure of the “architect” fused within unconscious perception and the blueprint of every existing body. Working in the medium of painting and draughtsmanship each image is composed by using a montage of component figurative studies. Simplified into pure linear form and interwoven to produce an otherwise unseen structural design behind the recognisable anatomy. Upon this geometrically perfect apparatus an infinite variety of perpetually interchanging forms serve to reveal a single entity.
ANNOTATIONS
They are indivisible, homogeneous, solid and unchanging, but they may dffer from each other in shape and size. They are infinite in number, exist in empty space ( the void ), and are in eternal motion. When enough atoms exist in a region of space they form a vortex, with a mass of heavier atoms at the centre attracting others; the speed of the motion ignites such masses and causes the celestial bodies. The arrangements and conglomerations produce the world we experience; this world is, however, only one of the infinite number of worlds that different arrangements of atoms produce. The soul is made of particularly fine atoms, but is a composite and hence is as perishable as the body. Perception is the result of 'eidola' or thin films of atoms being shed from surfaces of objects and interacting with the atoms of the soul. ( Democritus c. 400 BC )
Life may have its rules and the individual may have their ethical and moral principles, but the blank canvas is where the artist makes his own rules. This means the laws of the outside world have no bearing on the canvas or the page because it is for the artist to decide the rules of the void. The personality of the creator should always be shrouded in the mystery and the multifariousness of life. You do not want to drink a wine and find that it tastes of the winemaker; you want the wine to taste of the grape, the land and climate where it grows. (S.Catsellis b. 1987) Imagine a pin head a millimeter across, at the centre of St Pauls cathedral, surrounded by a cloud of microscopic dust motes far out in the dome of the cathedral. The pinhead represents the atomic nucleus; the dust motes are its retinue of electrons. That is how much empty space there is in a atom- and all of the seemingly solid objects in the material world are made of these ' empty spaces '.(J. Gribbin, c. 1984)
At first, I was deeply alarmed. I had the feeling that through the surface phenomena I was looking at a strangely beautiful interior, I now had to probe this wealth of structures nature had so generously spread out before me. (A. Heywood, 1999)
Is the dance of the particles just an illusion caused by our perception of the flow of time? Everything in the universe, past, present, and future,is connected to everything else, by a web of electromagnetic radiation that "sees" everything at once. Every electron eveywhere in the universe could be simply a different segment of just one "real" electron. All we are doing though, is scanning something that is fixed in space and time. There is nothing to stop a whole batch of particles appearing out of nothing and then recombining with one anouther and disappearing before the universe at large notices the discrepancy.
This array of ghost structures only describes what happens when we are not looking; when we look, all of the ghosts exept one vanish, and one of the ghosts solidifies as a real structure. The observation that crystalizes one structure out of the array of potential forms is equivalent, in terms of ocean wave paterns, to the disappearance of all possible waves except for one wave which describes the structural " blueprint ".
"Abstraction allows man to see with his mind what he cannot physically see with his eyes ... Abstract art enables the artist to perceive beyond the tangible, to extract the infinite out of the finite. It is the emancipation of the mind. It is an explosion into unknown areas." |
